Learning and Autonomy

Nature

Autonomy in learning is to choose what to give attention to, how long and where. Children are engaged in what they do and stimulated in their independence.
Children learn to observe a wonderful world with unlimited learning activities. The natural environment is continuously changing due to the seasons. Furthermore, the child experiences it within a certain time frame and culture thereby gaining insight into his/her ability to live within changing circumstances. He/she becomes aware of the multiple ways other creatures/people react to their natural surroundings..
Please check the next blog how children will benefit from autonomous experiences. It will empower learners, increase engagement, develop problem-solving skills, improve self-esteem and offer more variety, Furthermore, it will need certain skills that will help the children to be responsible for their own. learning.

Multi Generational

Autonomy is being responsible for your own learning experience. Learning consists of immersion in an activity, receiving information about the (theory of the) activity, explaining the content with others, organising learning activities for others, using the learning material in other contexts. In a Multi Generational Group of learners, each member of the group can choose its role. Sometimes a member will give some information, another will watch and listen, another comes with ideas to use the material  in another context. Children will see ample examples how adults quickly switch from the role of teacher, to that of questioning and of initiating.

A generation is characterised by differences in age, skill, experience, interest, responsibility, physical abilities, learning style, wisdom and agility etc. We are all able to learn, whether by teaching, coaching, or experiencing something for the first time. Multi Generational Learning focuses on topics of interest and excludes competitiveness.

How to start?
If we change the group from same-aged-students to Multi Generational Learners and the activities are interesting and relevant to all its members, the learning experiences of our children will change.

Seasonal Cycle

Autonomy means, we are focused on developing the skills, not the outcome. By offering real-life activities, many skills will pop-up in different contexts. Children will have multiple chances to work on the same skills. There is a possibility to practise the same skill for a longer time, without being embarrassed, or quickly acquire the skill and move on to learning new skills. .

As in the seasons, in every new real-life activity we have another chance to deepen our knowledge and skills.  We realise our understanding is partial. This keeps us humble and willing to search for ways to improve our attitudes and skills.

The need to conserve and to live with nature instead of opposed to it are challenges that urgently require action. We need a generation of experts who delve deeply into microscopic details and at the same time have general knowledge and morality. This begs for an educational approach in which teachers as well as learners need
to test their knowledge and talents within a real-life context.

Children are naturally very open to learn in real-life-situations. Daniel Quinn wrote: 'Children are the most fantastic learners in the world'.  and we agree. It is a privilege to be their guide and introduce them to the complexity of this world.
