Children are the Most Fantastic Learners in the World

Daniel Quinn

Welcome to the site of We the Guardians. Our names are Laurence en Pia Nicholson. We are your hosts.

We love to see children being inquisitive. Especially very young children love to explore and discover. The world is a mystery to them, but they are determined to find the logic behind it all ......and draw their own conclusions. They love to crack the code.

We see though that many children are discouraged and demotivated to learn. And when it is combined with lack of confidence we wonder: When in their life-journey did they loose their joy?

Our mission is to help you as parent or educator to bring joy and life back to the child. With scientific insights, experiences, community of families, we would love to inspire you to make your child's learning process interesting and relevant.

Both, very young children and older children, who refuse to learn have something in common: they do not want to be pushed into learning.

By changing where, with whom and how the children learn, we may witness a  change in the child's attitude towards learning.

What do Children need to be able to Learn?

1. Children thrive on good relations

Although many aspects can contribute to a positive learning experience, attachment is one of the main aspects that are often ignored.
A child needs to feel connected to the adult in the learning situation. When a child feels safe and he/ she is cared for by a caring adult, the world is open to explore.

Read on how you can make relations a priority in the learning process.

2. Autonomy is an important motor to learning.

Autonomy fosters interests and motivation. When children have a large part of their learning process into their own hands, self-regulating processes can take place.
Nature is the ideal place to learn autonomy.

3. Children want to know how the real world works and are determined to participate in it.

By taking part in real-life activities children can practise and improve their skills. These activities are presented in a changing and always slightly different environment or context. This will teach the child to be confident in challenges that come its way.

Relationships, Autonomy and Real-Life Activities

Relationships, Autonomy and Real-Life Activities

When we encounter low,  or an absence of motivation in the child, we may check the above requirements for learning.

When
the need for attachment has not been met, the child will look desperately for anything or anybody to fill that void. Obvious this is not the ideal situation for learning.

Autonomy is a real motivator for learning. When children are used to receive instruction during lessons, they need to develop some skills to take on a more active role.

The Real-Life-Activities give the ideal context to practise those skills.

If we change the context in which children learn, we may encounter a change in motivation towards learning as well.

Would you like to experience how these changes can impact you and your child? You are welcome to join the online and local meetings. The first two weeks are free of charge.

The need to conserve and to live with nature instead of opposed to it are challenges that urgently require action. We need a generation of experts who delve deeply into microscopic details and at the same time have general knowledge and morality. This begs for an educational approach in which teachers as well as learners need
to test their knowledge and talents within a real-life context.

Children are naturally very open to learn in real-life-situations. Daniel Quinn wrote: 'Children are the most fantastic learners in the world'.  and we agree. It is a privilege to be their guide and introduce them to the complexity of this world.
